How the Launchpad works

Crowdfund a space mission, on-chain

A team sets a funding goal and a deadline. Anyone in the world can back it with ETH or a debit card and gets mission tokens in return. Reach the goal and the funds go to work. Miss it and contributors can get their money back.

Step 1

Back a mission, get tokens

Contribute with ETH on Ethereum or a supported Layer 2, or pay by card if you have never used crypto. Each contribution mints mission tokens at a fixed rate.

Half the tokens go to contributors. The rest is reserved: 30% for the team, 17.5% for MoonDAO and 2.5% for a trading pool. Tokens give you a stake in the mission and a voice in how it is run.

Step 2

Goal reached: the funds go to work

If the mission reaches its goal by the deadline, 90% of the ETH goes to the team's multisig to build the mission.

5% and 2.5% of the tokens seed a Uniswap pool so the token can be traded. MoonDAO and Juicebox, the audited protocol that holds the funds, each receive 2.5%. Every payout is on-chain, so anyone can trace how the money is spent.

Step 3

Goal missed: get your money back

If the deadline passes before the goal is reached, the mission doesn't go ahead and the team receives nothing.

Contributors can return their tokens for a refund during a 28-day window. Teams choose whether to offer refunds when they launch, so check the mission page before you contribute.

Step 4

Locked in for the long run

The team's and MoonDAO's tokens are locked for a year, then unlock steadily until year four, so neither can sell their tokens early.

Teams succeed when their mission does, the same as the people who backed them.

For teams

  • Launch in minutes with a goal, a deadline and an optional token
  • No upfront cost beyond network gas
  • Reach backers around the world, including people new to crypto
  • Funds and the mission are controlled by your team's multisig

For contributors

  • Back missions with ETH or a debit card
  • Get mission tokens for every contribution
  • Refunds if a mission that offers them misses its goal
  • See exactly where the money goes, on-chain

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about launching your space mission.

Who can use the Launchpad?

Teams in the Space Acceleration Network can create Missions directly and permissionlessly, but anyone with a space-related project can apply to create their mission with the Launchpad—whether it's a research initiative, satellite deployment, lunar lander payload, or even a human spaceflight mission—in order to start raising funds. Apply now to tell us more about your objectives, fundraising goals, existing network, and how we can help.

Why use blockchain for space crowdfunding?

Blockchain ensures transparency, security, and trust in fundraising as well as being open to a global audience in a borderless nature. Every transaction is recorded onchain, meaning full visibility for contributors as to how funds are used, and offers unique opportunities for contributors to continue interacting with the project, including through governance decision making via tokens, ongoing stakeholding, or even revenue share opportunities in some cases, all through transparent and auditable computer code.

Is this platform only for space startups?

The Launchpad is primarily designed for space-related ventures, but any high-tech, hard-science, or deep-tech project aligned with MoonDAO's mission to help create or advance a lunar settlement could potentially launch a campaign.

How much does it cost to launch a campaign?

There is no upfront cost to create a Mission, but standard Ethereum network (gas) fees apply when deploying smart contracts. Of the funds raised by a successful Mission, 90% goes to the team, 5% seeds a liquidity pool for the Mission token, and MoonDAO and Juicebox each receive 2.5% to sustain the platform and support other space-related projects within the community-governed treasury. Likewise, 17.5% of the tokens created for a Mission are reserved for the MoonDAO treasury to align long-term interests, with a 1-year cliff and vesting through year four, meaning that tokens cannot be immediately sold. Furthermore, any outlays from the MoonDAO treasury require a vote.

How does the cliff and streaming work?

The tokens reserved for the Mission team (30% of the supply) and for MoonDAO (17.5%) are subject to a 1-year cliff, meaning none of them can be claimed during the first year. At the cliff a quarter unlocks, and the rest unlocks steadily until the end of year four. This prevents immediate sell-offs and keeps the team invested in the Mission's long-term success.

Should I create an ERC-20 token for my campaign?

It depends on your project's goals. An ERC-20 token can provide liquidity, community ownership, and governance features, but it also introduces risks like speculation and regulatory concerns. Tokens allow for tradability on decentralized exchanges, enabling supporters to buy, sell, or hold them as part of the project's ecosystem. They can also incentivize engagement through governance rights or utility within the project. However, speculative trading can create volatility, potentially impacting long-term sustainability.

Do I need to manage liquidity for my token?

If a mission launches successfully using an ERC-20 token, a liquidity pool (LP) will be created on Uniswap after the funding period ends. 5% of the raised ETH and 2.5% of the token supply will be added to the pool. Trading fees from the DEX will accrue to vMOONEY holders.

Can I fundraise in multiple cryptocurrencies?

Fundraising will be limited to the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), but contributors can participate across Ethereum mainnet and Layer 2 networks, including Arbitrum, Base, and Polygon. This ensures broad accessibility while keeping transactions efficient and cost-effective while also tying into the existing Space Acceleration Network and MoonDAO infrastructure, and the wider EVM ecosystem.

Can contributors withdraw their funds if they change their minds?

By default, if the team doesn't reach its funding goal by the deadline, contributors are refunded. If the fundraiser is successful, the team will be responsible for determining what to do with the treasury, including their policy on refunds if the mission cannot move forward.

What are the tax and regulatory implications of fundraising with crypto?

Tax and regulatory requirements vary by jurisdiction, and funds raised through the Launchpad may be considered taxable income. Depending on local laws, you may need to report contributions, pay capital gains tax on held crypto, or comply with securities regulations if your token is classified as an investment. Some regions also require KYC/AML compliance for fundraising. Since regulations are constantly evolving, we strongly recommend consulting a crypto-savvy legal or tax professional to ensure compliance. MoonDAO does not provide legal or tax advice, and responsibility for compliance rests with campaign creators.

Disclaimer: There is no expectation of profit with the $MOONEY token. It is a governance token. You are not receiving fractionalized ownership of the DAO's assets in exchange for the token, check the FAQ. Always ensure you are interacting with an official token address: Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, or Base.
