Abstract

Mission Cosmic Colombia uses the inspiration of space to democratize STEAM education for children and youth across Colombia, focusing on underserved communities and patients affected by cancer and degenerative diseases. Through a 7 day immersive program, Solidarity Space Kits, teacher training, and regional replication, the project delivers hands-on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics experiences that build skills, emotional resilience, and a culture of curiosity. This proposal requests funding to produce and distribute educational kits, run workshops, train educators, document impact, and create a sustainable model for replication.

Problem

Many Colombian children and adolescents lack access to high quality STEAM education due to economic, geographic, and social barriers. Rural and low income urban communities often have limited educational materials, few trained STEAM teachers, and low exposure to role models in science. Additionally, children facing serious illnesses (e.g., cancer or degenerative conditions) frequently lose access to educational and motivational experiences that support emotional wellbeing and future aspirations. These gaps reduce long term opportunities and limit Colombia's ability to develop a diverse, local talent pipeline for the space and technology sectors.

Solution

Mission Cosmic Colombia is a combined educational and social program that blends experiential STEAM workshops, cultural arts, and psychosocial support. The core components are:

The heart of Mission Cosmic Colombia is the ¨7-day immersive STEAM Space Journey", an experiential program designed to connect space exploration with creativity, hands-on learning, and emotional support. Each day builds a bridge between science, imagination, and hope, transforming education into a cosmic adventure that inspires and empowers.

Program Overview

Day 1 – Science in Space (Bogotá)

  • Activities: Lectures and demonstrations of scientific experiments in physics and astronomy.
  • Extras: Interactive games and building space shuttles to assemble.
  • Community participants: District schools and Alkimia Kósmica seedbed.

Day 2 – Space Technology (Bogotá)

  • Activities: Robotics and the innovation project "Cosmic Coffee".
  • Exhibition: Agricultural coffee rovers in collaboration with the Bogotá Botanical Garden.
  • Participants: Children and youth from all over the country.

Day 3 – Space Engineering (Medellín)

  • Focus: Practical and creative rocketry.
  • Community participants: Comuna Project

Day 4 – Mathematics for Space (Medellín)

  • Activities: Games and applied mathematics challenges to stimulate logical thinking and problem solving.
  • Community participants: Paraiso de Colores Foundation

Day 5 – Cosmic Arts (Bogotá)

  • Activities: Art therapy, creation of postcards, poetry, music, and films inspired by the universe.
  • Materials: Space painting kits.
  • Community participants: Children's Cancer Hospital and Jerónimo Soy Muy Feliz Foundation.

Day 6 – Teachers' Day (Bogotá)

  • Activities: Teach for Teaching – training activities so educators can replicate the model in their own schools and communities.
  • Community participants: Teachers from different schools and universities

Day 7 – Galaxy Day (Bogotá)

  • Activities: Large-scale community celebration blending science, art, and solidarity.
  • Focus: A day of fun for families, with presentations, student projects, and the delivery of Solidarity Space Kits.

This sequence ensures that every participant experiences the intersection of knowledge, creativity, and compassion. By the end of the week, children, families, and teachers will not only have learned about the universe, they will have felt part of it.

The 7 day STEAM Space Journey, carried out in Colombia's main cities, Bogotá and Medellín, with the option of extension in Santa Marta/Barranquilla offers a pathway in which each day is dedicated to a discipline: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, Teacher Training, and a Community Galaxy Day.

As part of the experience, the production and distribution of 150 Solidarity Space Kits will be carried out, aimed at children in hospitals and vulnerable communities. These kits include a paintable pillow, a dreams and creativity booklet, a legacy book section, and hope postcards, elements designed to spark imagination and deliver a message of support.

The program also includes a teacher training module, designed so that local educators can replicate the workshops independently and sustainably. In addition, the "Cosmic Guests" program will feature child influencers and young STEAM ambassadors who will accompany participants, sharing their journey and expertise in STEM careers.

Comprehensive multimedia documentation in the form of video and photo stories and short reports will be produced to measure impact and facilitate future fundraising and replication.

Finally, additional alternatives were considered, such as a parallel virtual program where children could attend complementary classes or meet expert speakers either before or after the in person visit.

Benefits

Core benefits for beneficiaries and MoonDAO:

  • Directly engages thousands of children and teachers with STEAM areas and motivational activities.
  • Provides emotional support for children in medical care through tangible Solidarity Space Kits.
  • Strengthens local capacity by training teachers in space-related activities that can be replicated in their institutions to reach more children.
  • Establishes itself as a replicable program in other Latin American countries such as Ecuador, Peru, and Argentina, expanding MoonDAO's reach.
  • Expands alliances with new entities and institutions in Colombia and Latin America, strengthening the support network and regional impact.
  • Positions MoonDAO as a visible, high-impact supporter of inclusive space education in Latin America, increasing community goodwill and the potential for NFT/collectible campaigns tied to impact milestones.
  • Increases the number of MoonDAO members and active participation in the community.
  • Offers potential revenue and visibility opportunities: branded collectible NFTs, sponsorships for regional events, or advanced teacher training workshops with fees, whose benefits will be sustainable for the same communities. However, the primary goal remains social impact rather than revenue generation.

Cosmic Guests:

A unique element of this mission is the participation of Colombian children and youth already involved in STEAM fields. They will attend as special guests and act as inspiring role models:

  • Super Toña
  • A girl science communicator who makes science practical and fun.
  • Mateo – "Ciencia en un Minuto" a Young passionate about space and exploration, inspiring with her authenticity and enthusiasm.
  • Mathias – Young STEAM Influencer A content creator who connects new generations with technology and science.

These guests will be ambassadors of inspiration, showing that role models can also be young people like them.

Risks

Primary risks and mitigation strategies:

  • Logistics or vendor delays (kits) – mitigation: multiple local suppliers, early procurement windows, and contingency budgets (5–10%).
  • Low uptake in target regions – mitigation: partnerships with local foundations and schools (Jerónimo Soy Muy Feliz Foundation, Nuevo Amanecer Foundation, Comuna Project, Paraiso de Colores Foundation, Colegio Cultura Popular), targeted outreach.
  • Health or safety constraints for hospital visits – mitigation: coordination with hospital social workers, adherence to health protocols, and preparation of sanitized kit variants when necessary.
  • Budget shortfall – mitigation: phased implementation, prioritizing kit production and teacher training, and activating additional fundraising through local sponsors and companies beyond MoonDAO.
  • Transportation and logistics for volunteers and MoonDAO team – mitigation: defined routes and schedules, partnerships with local transport companies, travel insurance and biosecurity protocols, as well as backup providers and contingency budgets to cover unforeseen events.
